'Let me see the contract that Jobi mentioned you wanted to show me.' Staci said to Sasha, oozing charm and benevolence.

She reached into her bag, retrieved it and passed it to her.

Staci had joined Sasha on the couch after she had ushered all the uninvited visitors out of her office; a deliberate ploy to make her seem more like a friend to the girl. She began reading, and then stopped abruptly. 'Where are my manners? Can I offer you a drink, Sasha? Coffee or a Coke, water? Maybe a pastry, too? I'll need a while to read this.'

'Yeah. Cool. Coffee sounds good.'

'How would you like it? We have an espresso machine and Jobi can do any style you want.'

'Maybe that's not a good idea.' Sasha grinned.

Staci was confused. 'Why not?'

'She heard the song I just wrote,' she laughed, 'I might get a new style - "Coffee, a la rat poison."'

Staci smiled back. 'How about a cappuccino? Hold the rat poison.'

Sasha nodded yes, and Staci went to her phone. 'Louise. Would you make a beautiful cappuccino for my special guest, Sasha. And bring in a plate of pastries.'

'So you really don't trust her? You gave the gig to Louise...'

'I was watching Jobi's face as you sang. She is your biggest fan, Sasha. Her face was in raptures.'

'But you still don't trust her..?'

'Nonsense. She's a lovely girl.' With that Staci started reading the contract Mark had prepared for Sasha.

After a minute there was a tap on the door and Louise came in with a silver tray, piled high with different pastries, donuts and cupcakes. Beside them, sat a cup of coffee, a perfect love-heart made of dark-brown cocoa decorated the foamy top. She placed the tray on the small table in front of Sasha and smiled. 'I loved your song, Sasha. That was just the coolest, funniest thing, ever.'

'Thanks.'

By the time Sasha had taken care of two pastries, one chocolate coated donut and the cappuccino, Staci had finished reading. She melodramatically placed the contract on her lap and looked at Sasha. 'I'm so glad you came to see me before you signed this, Sasha. Mark is doing a very bad thing... to you. It doesn't surprise me, though it is all part of why we had to let him go.'

'Are you saying he's a crook?'

'I'm a lawyer, Sasha. I would never accuse another lawyer of that and not expect a lawsuit to land on my desk. What I am saying is that this contract is outrageously weighted towards Mark's interests. He wants 45% of your earnings and he is expressly not offering you a recording contract with one of the majors.'

'Yeah. That bothered me a bit.'

'And well it should. A talent like yours needs the global strength of a major company behind it. I believe you can be a world-wide artist, not just here in America, but you need the right representation. 45%! Really, what is that man thinking?' She paused, shook her head and made a small tsk! tsk! sound with her tongue.
